Digital Entry System Replaces Traditional Passport Stamps
Starting October 12, 2025, travelers from the United States will encounter a new border process when visiting Europe. The European Union is implementing the Entry/Exit System (EES), which will replace conventional passport stamps with electronic records. Under this program, visitors must provide a facial photo and four fingerprints at airports, seaports, and land crossings within the Schengen area.
Who Will Be Affected and Exceptions
The policy applies to all short-term visitors from non-EU countries, including Americans traveling without visas. Biometric data is collected upon a traveler’s first entry and retained to facilitate faster processing on subsequent trips. Children under 12 are exempt from fingerprinting, and accommodations are made for travelers unable to provide prints due to medical or other legitimate reasons.
Implementation Challenges and Privacy Concerns
EU officials maintain that the system will enhance security and help monitor overstays, but authorities warn that the initial rollout could create delays at airports and other border points. Privacy advocates have expressed concern about the length of time biometric data will be stored and the effectiveness of safeguards to protect sensitive personal information under EU regulations.
