A car explosion in southern Moscow on Monday claimed the life of Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov, a high-ranking official in Russia’s military command. The blast occurred in a parking lot next to a residential building, according to local media reports. Sarvarov, who led the Operational Training Directorate of the Russian Armed Forces’ General Staff, was critically injured and later died from his wounds, the Investigative Committee confirmed.
Investigation Launched
Authorities opened a criminal case into Sarvarov’s death and said the motive is still unclear. Officials have not revealed how the explosive device was deployed but emphasized that the incident is being treated as a deliberate attack. Investigators are examining all available evidence to determine the circumstances surrounding the explosion.
Possible Foreign Involvement
Russian authorities are exploring multiple leads, including the possibility that Ukrainian intelligence services were involved. “Investigators are pursuing numerous lines of enquiry regarding the murder. One of these is that the crime was orchestrated by Ukrainian intelligence services,” said Investigative Committee spokesperson Svetlana Petrenko. She added that forensic examinations, explosives analysis, witness interviews, and surveillance footage reviews are all underway.
No Official Response From Kyiv
Ukrainian officials have not responded to the allegations. Russian authorities have also refrained from identifying any suspects or releasing evidence linking the attack to foreign actors.
Part of a Pattern of Targeted Attacks
The killing follows a string of attacks on senior Russian military figures in Moscow since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in early 2022. In December 2024, Lieutenant General Igor Kirillov was killed by a remotely detonated scooter, and in April, Lieutenant General Yaroslav Moskalik died in a car bomb explosion. Ukraine has not publicly claimed responsibility for either incident.
