Romanian authorities have confirmed that a drone crossed into their airspace during Russian attacks on Ukraine, triggering a response from NATO aircraft. Poland, reacting to potential threats along its border, also scrambled jets and elevated its defensive posture.
Unmanned Aircraft Detected in Romanian Airspace
According to Romania’s Defence Ministry, radar tracked the drone traveling roughly 10 kilometers inside national borders before contact was lost near the Danube Delta village of Chilia Veche. Officials noted that it maintained a low flight path and avoided populated areas.
In response, Romania launched two F-16 fighter jets, supported by Eurofighters assigned to NATO air policing duties. Authorities issued alerts to residents in Tulcea County, instructing them to remain sheltered until the incident concluded.
The drone eventually turned back toward Ukraine, and no injuries or damage were reported.
Differing Accounts on Duration
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said the drone remained over NATO airspace for nearly fifty minutes, describing the breach as a deliberate escalation by Russia.
Romania’s Defence Minister stated that pilots were ready to engage the drone but chose not to after confirming it was leaving Romanian territory.
Poland Activates Emergency Measures
Polish authorities also took precautionary steps late Friday in response to signs of possible drone activity near their eastern border. Fighter jets were deployed, Lublin airport was temporarily closed, and surface-to-air defense systems were placed on heightened alert.
No drone incursions were confirmed in Polish airspace, but officials stressed that the measures were necessary due to repeated aerial threats in the region.
Pressure on NATO’s Eastern Border
Romania and Poland have previously found fragments of Russian drones on their territory, heightening concerns about the risk of the war spilling over into NATO countries.
NATO confirmed it had been briefed on the Romanian incident and emphasized that civilians were not in immediate danger. The episode, however, highlights the ongoing security challenges for member states bordering Ukraine.
