The Hong Kong Observatory has lifted the amber rainstorm warning, but weather officials say residents should continue to prepare for heavy rain, strong winds, and rough sea conditions over the coming days.
The amber rainstorm warning was issued at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday before being canceled at 3:15 p.m. Earlier in the day, the observatory replaced the standby typhoon signal with the strong monsoon signal at 3:21 a.m. as weather conditions changed across the city.
According to the Hong Kong Observatory, unsettled weather is expected to continue until the middle of next week. The forecast includes periods of heavy showers, thunderstorms, strong winds, and rough seas affecting Hong Kong and nearby coastal areas.
Weather officials said Tropical Cyclone Maysak is expected to move across the Beibu Wan, also known as the Gulf of Tonkin, before reaching China’s Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region and northern Vietnam. The storm is forecast to weaken as it moves farther inland.
Although the cyclone is moving away from Hong Kong, its weather system continues to influence local conditions. The observatory said a southeast monsoon linked to a high-pressure ridge will keep winds strong, especially in offshore waters and on higher ground.
Forecasters warned that some parts of Hong Kong could experience heavier downpours along with squally thunderstorms and sudden strong wind gusts. These conditions may reduce visibility on roads and create hazardous conditions for people outdoors.
Authorities also warned about rough sea conditions caused by large swells. Residents and visitors have been advised to stay away from the shoreline and avoid water sports until conditions improve. Strong waves and currents can remain dangerous even after heavy rain begins to ease.
The unsettled weather is expected to continue along the coast of Guangdong Province during the early part of next week. The observatory said an active southerly airstream will continue to bring clouds, frequent showers, and thunderstorms across the region.
According to the latest nine-day weather forecast, cloudy skies with periods of rain and thunderstorms are expected to continue through Thursday. Some brighter conditions with sunny intervals may return later in the week if weather systems become more stable.
Despite the wet conditions, temperatures are also expected to rise. Forecasters predict that daytime highs could reach around 34 degrees Celsius by Thursday and Friday.
The increase in temperatures is linked to Tropical Cyclone Bavi, which is moving across the western North Pacific toward waters east of Taiwan. Meteorologists said the cyclone’s subsiding air is expected to bring hotter weather to southern China later in the week.
Weather officials continue to encourage residents to monitor the latest forecasts and weather warnings before making travel or outdoor plans. Sudden changes in rainfall, wind strength, and sea conditions remain possible while the unstable weather pattern continues.
The Hong Kong Observatory also reminded the public to take extra care during periods of heavy rain. Drivers should slow down on wet roads, while people in low-lying areas should remain alert for localized flooding. Those planning outdoor activities are advised to check weather updates regularly until conditions improve.
