Blue Origin has announced plans for a massive satellite internet network. The rocket company belongs to Amazon founder Jeff Bezos. Blue Origin said it will launch over 5,400 satellites into orbit. The project marks a major expansion of the company’s space operations. The network aims to provide continuous internet access across the globe.
TeraWave Promises Fast, Global Connectivity
The company named the system TeraWave. Blue Origin said the network will deliver uninterrupted internet service worldwide. It will also transfer enormous amounts of data at very high speeds. The company said TeraWave will outperform existing commercial satellite networks. Even after deployment, the network will remain smaller than Starlink’s constellation.
Starlink Holds Market Dominance
Starlink remains the leading satellite internet provider. The network is part of Elon Musk’s SpaceX. Starlink offers internet and phone services directly to individual users. Blue Origin said TeraWave will not focus on private consumers. Instead, the company will serve data centres, businesses, and government clients.
Speed Claims Set TeraWave Apart
Blue Origin said TeraWave will reach speeds of up to six terabits per second. The company said rival networks cannot match this performance. Several companies already compete in the satellite internet market. Amazon is among the biggest competitors. Bezos still serves as Amazon’s executive chairman after stepping down as chief executive in 2021.
Amazon Expands Its Leo Satellite Network
Amazon runs its own satellite venture, Leo. The company currently operates around 180 satellites in orbit. It launched dozens more satellites just last week. Amazon plans to grow the network to over 3,000 satellites. Leo focuses on delivering internet to the general public. Amazon promotes the network as a tool for global high-speed connectivity. The company has not revealed a full deployment schedule.
Launch Timeline and Recent Milestones
Blue Origin said it will begin launching TeraWave satellites by late 2027. The company has achieved several technical milestones recently. In November, it successfully landed a rocket booster on a floating platform. Only SpaceX had previously accomplished this feat.
Celebrity Flight Draws Public Criticism
In April, Blue Origin launched an 11-minute space flight with an all-female crew. The passengers included Lauren Sánchez, Katy Perry, and Gayle King. The flight attracted global attention. Some commentators criticised the mission as tone-deaf. They said the trip felt inappropriate during economic struggles.
