Patrick Bamford has signed with Sheffield United just seven months after leading derogatory chants about manager Chris Wilder during Leeds United’s promotion celebrations.
The 32-year-old striker, a free agent since leaving Leeds in August, has joined the Championship side on a short-term deal until January, as Wilder looks to boost the division’s lowest-scoring attack.
Bamford and Wilder have a tense history dating back to the 2018–19 season, when Wilder called him a “muppet” during their Championship promotion battle. Despite that, the pair have since reconciled — with Bamford and then-Leeds boss Daniel Farke phoning Wilder to apologise after the video of the chant went viral.
Wilder said afterward: “I appreciated and respected him giving me a call … I have absolutely no issue. I am cool with it.”
Bamford, who earned one England cap in 2021, made 18 appearances for Leeds last season but has struggled with injuries in recent years. His move offers both player and club a chance at redemption as Sheffield United fight to climb out of the relegation zone.
