More than 90 percent of mainland Chinese companies plan to expand overseas within the next two years, with over 80 percent intending to use Hong Kong as a gateway to Southeast Asia, according to a new survey released by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council.
The findings highlight the growing importance of Southeast Asia as a destination for Chinese businesses seeking international growth. The report suggests that companies are increasingly looking beyond traditional markets and are building stronger connections with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) region.
The survey was conducted between January and February 2026 and gathered responses from more than 2,000 mainland Chinese enterprises. Participants represented a broad range of industries, including manufacturing, technology, trade, logistics, and professional services.
According to the research, overseas expansion remains a major priority for Chinese businesses despite ongoing economic uncertainties in global markets. More than nine out of ten surveyed companies said they plan to establish or expand international operations during the next two years.
Among those planning overseas growth, Southeast Asia emerged as one of the most attractive destinations. Many firms view ASEAN economies as important growth markets because of their large populations, rising consumer demand, expanding middle class, and increasing digital adoption.
The survey also found that Hong Kong continues to play a key role in regional business strategies. More than 80 percent of respondents said they plan to use the city as a launch pad for entering ASEAN markets. Businesses cited Hong Kong’s international financial system, professional services sector, legal framework, and strong regional connectivity as major advantages.
Bruce Pang, Director of Research at the Hong Kong Trade Development Council, said ASEAN has become a priority destination for mainland companies seeking international opportunities. He noted that businesses are pursuing more than simple sales growth and are increasingly investing in long-term regional operations.
According to Pang, many enterprises are building regional supply chains, investing in higher-value activities, and expanding into industries that are expected to drive future economic growth. These efforts reflect a broader shift toward deeper market integration and long-term business development across Southeast Asia.
Technology-focused sectors are attracting particular interest. Companies are exploring opportunities in artificial intelligence, semiconductor manufacturing, advanced technology services, and new energy industries. These sectors are viewed as key growth areas as governments and businesses across the region continue to invest in digital transformation and industrial development.
The trend also reflects efforts by Chinese firms to diversify their operations and reduce dependence on any single market. By establishing a presence across multiple ASEAN countries, businesses aim to strengthen supply chain resilience and improve access to fast-growing economies.
ASEAN has become one of the world’s most dynamic economic regions. Countries including Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, and the Philippines continue to attract investment due to strong economic growth, infrastructure development, and expanding consumer markets.
For many mainland enterprises, Hong Kong serves as a strategic bridge between China and Southeast Asia. The city offers access to international financing, professional expertise, and business networks that can support cross-border expansion.
Business leaders also view Hong Kong as an important center for trade, investment management, legal services, and regional headquarters operations. These strengths make it an attractive base for companies seeking to coordinate activities across multiple Southeast Asian markets.
The survey results indicate that outbound investment from mainland China is likely to remain strong in the coming years. As companies continue to pursue international growth opportunities, ASEAN is expected to remain a key destination for expansion plans.
Industry observers believe the growing connection between mainland Chinese businesses, Hong Kong, and Southeast Asia could further strengthen regional economic integration. Increased investment, trade activity, and technology collaboration may create new opportunities for businesses across the region.
The Hong Kong Asean Expansion trend highlighted in the survey underscores the city’s continuing role as a major business gateway. With more mainland firms preparing for international growth, Hong Kong is expected to remain an important platform for companies seeking access to Southeast Asia’s rapidly expanding economies.
