A 65-year-old taxi driver has been arrested after a deadly road accident in Hong Kong killed an elderly pedestrian in Tung Chung.
The crash happened on Monday under a footbridge in the Tung Chung area. Police said the taxi struck an 87-year-old man while he was crossing the road.
The victim became trapped beneath the vehicle after the collision. Emergency crews arrived at the scene and rescued him before taking him to hospital for treatment.
Despite medical efforts, the man later died from his injuries.
Police arrested the taxi driver on suspicion related to dangerous driving causing death. Authorities are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash.
The latest incident has raised fresh concern over road safety in Hong Kong, especially after another fatal accident involving an elderly taxi driver earlier this month.
Just five days before the Tung Chung crash, police arrested a 70-year-old taxi driver after another deadly road accident in Ngau Tau Kok.
In that case, authorities said the driver lost control of his taxi before mounting a pavement. One woman was killed and another person suffered serious injuries.
The two fatal crashes within a short period have renewed public discussion about elderly drivers and road safety standards in Hong Kong.
Taxi services remain one of the most widely used forms of transport in the city. Many drivers continue working well into older age because of financial pressures and workforce shortages in the transport sector.
However, traffic safety experts have often called for stronger monitoring of older commercial drivers. Some have suggested more frequent medical checks and driving assessments for elderly drivers operating public vehicles.
Police did not immediately release details about what may have caused Monday’s accident. Investigators are expected to examine road conditions, vehicle speed, and possible driver error.
Witnesses near the scene said emergency workers quickly blocked off part of the road after the collision. Traffic in the area slowed as officers carried out their investigation.
Fatal traffic accidents involving pedestrians remain a serious concern in Hong Kong, especially among elderly residents. Older pedestrians are often considered more vulnerable because they may have slower movement and greater physical risk during collisions.
Transport authorities regularly remind drivers to slow down near crossings and crowded areas. Pedestrians are also advised to remain alert while crossing roads, even in areas with traffic controls.
Hong Kong police continue to conduct road safety campaigns throughout the city. These efforts focus on reducing speeding, distracted driving, and dangerous road behavior.
The recent crashes have once again placed attention on public transport safety and driver responsibility. Community groups and road safety advocates are expected to push for stronger measures following the latest fatal incidents.
The arrested taxi driver remains under police investigation. Authorities have not yet announced whether formal charges will be filed.
The death of the 87-year-old pedestrian has added to growing concerns about traffic dangers facing elderly residents in busy urban areas.
Police urged anyone who witnessed the Tung Chung accident or has information about the crash to contact investigators as the inquiry continues.
