Hong Kong Police Force has announced it will prosecute a seventh suspect in connection with the 1999 murder of a newspaper vendor, while also searching for an eighth person allegedly linked to the long-running case.
The suspect, a 57-year-old man surnamed Lin, was recently handed over by authorities in Shenzhen before being formally charged with murder. He is accused of playing a key role in the killing of Ho Wai-ha in the Sham Shui Po district more than 25 years ago.
Investigators say Lin is suspected of recruiting the attackers and arranging transport for the group involved in the crime. His arrest marks another development in a case that has remained open for decades and has seen gradual progress through renewed investigations and cross-border cooperation.
The murder of Ho Wai-ha in 1999 shocked the local community at the time and led to a prolonged investigation involving multiple suspects. Over the years, authorities have gradually identified and detained individuals believed to be connected to the attack.
Police said efforts are continuing to locate another suspect who remains at large. They have not released further details about the individual but confirmed that the search remains active as part of ongoing investigative work.
The latest arrest highlights continued law enforcement cooperation between Hong Kong and mainland Chinese authorities, particularly in cases involving serious historical crimes. The handover of the suspect from Shenzhen played a key role in advancing the investigation.
Authorities have not disclosed whether additional arrests are expected, but officials indicated that the case remains active and further developments are possible as new evidence is reviewed.
Cold case investigations in Hong Kong have increasingly relied on improved forensic methods, renewed witness testimony, and cross-border information sharing to resolve older criminal cases that previously remained unsolved.
The case has drawn renewed public attention due to its long duration and the gradual progress made in identifying individuals allegedly involved in the murder.
Police have reiterated their commitment to pursuing all remaining suspects and ensuring that those responsible for serious crimes are brought to justice, regardless of the time that has passed since the incident.
