Idrissa Gueye was applauded by his Everton teammates after apologising for his red-card incident during Monday’s win at Manchester United, where he became the first Premier League player in 17 years to be sent off for striking a teammate.
The midfielder slapped Michael Keane following a heated exchange after Gueye’s misplaced pass almost led to a goal for Bruno Fernandes. Everton went on to claim a 1–0 victory at Old Trafford despite playing with 10 men for most of the match.
After the game, Gueye addressed the squad and personally apologised to Keane as well as the team for putting them in a difficult position. His words were warmly received, with teammates responding with a round of applause.
Gueye may still face internal disciplinary action from Everton, with manager David Moyes confirming standard fines are likely to apply. The 36-year-old will miss three matches due to suspension and may also be called up by Senegal for the Africa Cup of Nations, potentially keeping him out until mid-December.
Gueye later issued a public apology on social media, taking full responsibility for his actions and promising it would not happen again.
