Georgian Authorities Seize Radioactive Material in Sting Operation
Three Chinese citizens have been arrested in Georgia after allegedly attempting to purchase uranium through an underground deal. The State Security Service said the arrests were made in Tbilisi during a coordinated sting operation in which the suspects sought to acquire about two kilograms of radioactive material for roughly $400,000. The uranium was confiscated and transferred to a secure facility for further inspection by specialists.
Officials Say Suspects Planned to Move Uranium to China
Investigators allege that the group intended to transport the uranium from Georgia to China using a route that passed through Russia. One of the accused was reportedly staying in Georgia illegally, while the others coordinated aspects of the plan remotely. Law enforcement officers later searched apartments in Tbilisi and Batumi, recovering documents and digital evidence connected to the illicit deal.
Facing Charges and Global Security Concerns
The detainees have been charged under Georgian law for the unlawful handling and trafficking of nuclear materials, offenses that carry sentences of up to ten years in prison. Security officials noted that the case underscores ongoing challenges in stopping the illegal trade of radioactive substances, warning that the global market for such materials continues to pose serious security risks.
