Tesla Struggles to Keep Pace
Tesla’s European sales fell sharply in July, dropping 40% compared with the same month last year. The European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA) reported 8,837 Tesla vehicles registered across the EU, the UK, and the European Free Trade Association, down from 14,769 in July 2024. Even with updates to the Model Y, the company is facing mounting challenges in the region.
BYD Expands Rapidly
BYD saw registrations soar to 13,503 last month, more than triple the 4,151 recorded in July 2024. Its market share rose to 1.2%, surpassing Tesla’s 0.8%. With competitively priced vehicles and aggressive expansion strategies, BYD has strengthened its presence across Europe and earlier this year overtook Tesla in sales, according to JATO Dynamics.
UK Incentives and Industry Outlook
In the UK, new subsidies have been introduced to encourage electric vehicle adoption. Ford will be the first manufacturer to claim the maximum £3,750 grant on two models, while 26 additional vehicles qualify for £1,500. The scheme applies to cars priced under £37,000, with discounts automatically applied at the point of sale. UK car production increased 5.6% in July, the second month of consecutive growth. The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders cautioned, however, that the sector faces ongoing uncertainty due to weak consumer confidence and volatile trade flows. Across Europe, 1.011 million battery-electric vehicles were registered in the first seven months of 2025, representing 15.6% of the market, while hybrids continued to dominate with 2.255 million units, driven by strong growth in France, Spain, Germany, and Italy.
