Rescue effort ends in multiple fatalities on Egypt’s Mediterranean coast
Alexandria, Egypt – Seven young people lost their lives in the Mediterranean Sea west of Alexandria while attempting to save a fellow student.
Around 150 students were gathered at the beach when one female student entered the water on Saturday, despite a red flag warning of dangerous conditions. She soon struggled against the strong waves.
Several classmates jumped in to assist her but were also caught by the powerful currents. Authorities confirmed that six victims, aged between 15 and 21, died during the incident.
The following day, rescue teams recovered another body, a man in his early 20s who had also tried to help, according to local news outlet Al-Masri al-Jum. Additionally, 24 students received medical treatment after nearly drowning.
The incident highlights the ongoing dangers of swimming in hazardous conditions along Egypt’s Mediterranean shoreline.
