SA Police’s Bomb Response Unit was deployed to an Elizabeth Park home after dangerous explosive chemicals were allegedly discovered, leading to the arrest of a 55-year-old man. The bomb squad successfully removed the “volatile” materials from the property, ensuring the safety of the surrounding area. This significant operation took place at a Waytown Street address, bringing local law enforcement and specialist units to the scene last night. The swift action prevented potential harm and allowed police to secure the location effectively, removing any immediate threat.
The arrested resident faces multiple charges, including possessing instructions and supplies for manufacturing explosives, alongside various drug offences. Police confirmed the discovery of “volatile explosive materials” and cannabis plants found “throughout the property.” Detective Chief Inspector David Huddy stated that numerous small quantities of chemicals, powders, and precursors were identified, handled, and safely removed. The incident highlights the dangers associated with handling such substances, prompting a thorough investigation into the nature and potential threat level of the materials.
Authorities quickly clarified that the matter is not terror-related, allaying fears within the community. While Waytown Street was temporarily closed to traffic and the public was asked to avoid the area, police assured residents there was no threat to neighbouring properties, and an evacuation was not deemed necessary. Instead, residents on Waytown Street were contacted and advised to remain inside their homes while experts from the Bomb Response Unit carried out their work, demonstrating a controlled and cautious approach to the situation.
The 55-year-old man, who also faces charges for cultivating and possessing cannabis, is scheduled to appear before the Elizabeth Magistrates Court. The focus now shifts to the meticulous analysis of the seized materials to determine “how much of a threat this material was to the person inside the house or beyond.” Police are urging anyone with further information related to this incident to contact Crime Stoppers, ensuring all relevant details are brought to light for a comprehensive investigation and judicial process.
