Hong Kong police have arrested nine people during a week-long Hong Kong Driving Crackdown aimed at reducing dangerous driving and improving road safety across major highways in the New Territories North region. The operation targeted speeding, reckless driving, and other serious traffic violations that officials say contribute to many road accidents.
According to police, the enforcement campaign ran from July 5 through Saturday. Officers from the New Territories North Traffic Headquarters carried out patrols and targeted operations across key road networks to detect drivers who ignored traffic laws and put other road users at risk.
Among those arrested were nine suspects, including two individuals who were already wanted by police. Authorities said the arrests were linked to a range of serious driving offences discovered during the operation.
Police explained that the campaign followed an analysis of recent traffic conditions on highways in the region. The review found that many crashes were caused by unsafe driving practices, including reckless lane changes, improper lane switching, speeding, and failure to follow lane traffic regulations.
Officers said dangerous lane cutting remains one of the leading causes of highway collisions. Drivers who suddenly change lanes without proper signaling or safe spacing increase the risk of accidents, especially on busy roads with fast-moving traffic.
During the operation, traffic officers increased patrols, monitored driver behavior, and stopped vehicles suspected of violating road safety laws. Police also used enforcement measures to identify motorists who repeatedly ignored traffic regulations.
Authorities stressed that maintaining road safety remains a top priority. They said strict enforcement is necessary to reduce preventable crashes and encourage drivers to follow traffic laws at all times.
Police reminded motorists that responsible driving protects not only drivers but also passengers, pedestrians, and other road users. They urged drivers to obey speed limits, remain in the correct lane, avoid sudden lane changes, and pay close attention to road conditions.
Traffic officers also warned that reckless driving can result in serious legal consequences, including arrest, prosecution, fines, license suspension, or imprisonment depending on the severity of the offence.
Road safety campaigns continue throughout Hong Kong as authorities work to reduce the number of traffic accidents. Police regularly conduct enforcement operations targeting speeding, dangerous overtaking, distracted driving, impaired driving, and other high-risk behaviors.
Officials said public cooperation is essential to improving safety on the city’s roads. Drivers are encouraged to remain patient during heavy traffic, follow road signs, and respect traffic rules designed to protect everyone using the transportation network.
The latest enforcement campaign forms part of broader efforts by Hong Kong police to improve highway safety through education, enforcement, and regular traffic monitoring. Authorities say they will continue carrying out similar operations in areas where accident risks remain high.
Police added that future enforcement actions will focus on reducing dangerous driving behaviors and ensuring that motorists comply with road safety regulations. They also encouraged members of the public to report reckless driving when it places other road users in immediate danger.
With continued enforcement and greater public awareness, officials hope to reduce serious traffic collisions and create safer roads throughout Hong Kong. The latest arrests demonstrate the police’s ongoing commitment to improving highway safety and holding dangerous drivers accountable under the law.
